Dearc Sgiathanach is a species of pterosaur that lived in the Middle Jurassic period, around 170 million years ago. Its name means ‘winged reptile’ in Scottish Gaelic, in reference to its discovery on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. Described in 2022, Dearc Sgiathanach is known from an exceptionally well-preserved skeleton. It is the largest pterosaur ever discovered in the Jurassic, with an estimated wingspan of over 2.5 metres. The discovery of Dearc Sgiathanach has revolutionised our understanding of pterosaur evolution. It proves that large pterosaurs already existed in the Middle Jurassic, much earlier than previously thought.
